Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No - compression happens on your device using your browser's canvas engine. Nothing is uploaded, ever.
What quality setting should I use?
70-80% is usually visually identical to the original at a fraction of the size. Go lower for email attachments or web thumbnails.
Why did my PNG become a JPG?
JPEG compresses photos far better. If you need transparency preserved, use our Image Converter and pick PNG or WebP.
Smaller images without visible quality loss
Modern phone cameras produce 4-12 MB photos - beautiful, and completely impractical for websites, emails and forms that cap uploads at 1-2 MB. This compressor re-encodes images with tuned quality settings that discard data your eyes can't see first, typically cutting 70-90% of the file size before any visible change appears.
Compression runs on your own device using the browser's image codecs. Nothing is uploaded, there's no queue, and a batch of vacation photos compresses as fast as your laptop can process them.
How far can you compress?
It depends on the content. Photographs tolerate compression extremely well - quality 70-80 is visually indistinguishable from the original for most photos while cutting size dramatically. Screenshots and images with sharp text show artifacts sooner, so keep them at higher quality or use PNG. The live preview shows the compressed result and its exact new size before you download, so you can find the sweet spot by eye rather than by guessing.

JPG, PNG or WebP?
For photos, JPG (or WebP where accepted) gives the smallest files. PNG is lossless and much larger - right for logos, screenshots and anything with transparency, wrong for photographs. WebP compresses roughly 25-30% smaller than JPG at the same quality and is supported by every modern browser, making it the best choice for images going on your own website.
