Where do I put the sitemap?

Upload sitemap.xml to your website's root (e.g. example.com/sitemap.xml) and reference it in robots.txt, then submit it in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

What do changefreq and priority do?

They're hints to crawlers about how often a page changes and its relative importance. Search engines treat them as suggestions, not rules.

Is there a URL limit?

A single sitemap supports up to 50,000 URLs. For more, split them across multiple sitemaps and list those in a sitemap index.
